Pazflor, the World's Largest FPSO

FPSO (Floating Production Storage & Offloading Unit) is a new type of offshore production facility with massive oil processing, storage, and offloading equipment to produce and store the oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker and safely transported to land even in rough sea conditions. As the oil exploration needed to move to deeper seas after all the oil fields with platforms sitting on continental shelf were depleted, the new concept of oil production facility was introduced.
The Pazflor FPSO built by DSME as a turnkey project is the largest in the world at 325 meters long, 62 meters wide and weighing 120,000 tons with total construction cost reaching approximately KRW 2.6 trillion.
While design and production are commonly separated for an offshore project, this was the first large-scale FPSO project that DSME has carried as a whole under an Engineering, Procurement, Commissioning and offshore Installation (EPCI) contract, including the basic and detailed production design, material procurement, trial run, and the installation.
It can produce 220,000 barrels of crude oil and 440,000 cubic meters (㎥) of natural gas per day from two separate reservoirs with a storage capacity of 190,000 barrels (approx. 260,000 tons) which is as much as Korea's daily oil consumption.

LNG-FPSO and LNG-FSRU with a New Concept

LNG-FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) is a new class of offshore plant that houses the necessary facilities for production, storage, and offloading liquefied natural gas. It offers the advantages of time and cost reduction compared to the conventional method that produces natural gas offshore, liquefies and stores it on land, and then offloads it to an LNG carrier.
LNG FPSOs has an offshore LNG-FSRU (Floating Storage & Regasification Unit) that serves as a terminal with LNG storage and regasification facilities to lead reduced land expenses, quicker delivery to meet the demands, and reduced concerns among neighboring communities according to the "safer by distance" principle.
DSME has the most patent fillings in this area.

Dreams Come True...

The LNG RV is a vessel with combined functions of the conventional LNG carrier, which is designed mainly for transporting LNG, offshore mooring turret, and onboard regas facilities which connects regasified natural gas directly to a commercial pipeline trunk offshore, thereby eliminating the need for a land-based LNG receiving and regas facilities. Various technologies from the builder (DSME), owner (EXMAR), and operator (Excelerate Energy) have been used for the building of the LNG RV including LNG vessel and terminal building, oil refining, gas FPSO, crude oil offloading and shuttle tanker mooring.

Removing the burden of massive investment costs and time for building a land-based LNG terminal and environmental destruction

Depending on the size, the construction of an LNG plant requires astronomical investment costs to build onshore receiving terminal and large-scale storage facilities where the massive LNG carrier docks and offlads the LNG.
The American company who became the first client ordering an LNG-RV from DSME and putting it to use, turned to an LNG-RV as an alternative after the company faced opposition to building an onshore LNG plant which could be environmentally destructive.

The onshore LNG plants are exposed to terror threats and a minor accident which could lead to potentially catastrophic disaster impacts in densely populated areas.
Since LNG-RVs are typically located more than 100 miles away from the nearest land and directly connected to an offshore terminal to offload regasified natural gas, they are inherently safer from these risks.

Shorter construction time for building a LNG plant

It can appease public opinion cut the construction costs and time which could take 5 to 7 years from doing the feasibility study on an onshore LNG plant, convincing environmentalists, customer clearance, planning, and to actual building.

• In LNG RV, 6 sets of high-pressure pumps and vaporizers are installed in the forward portion. The typical LNG regasification capacity of the LNG RV is 500 mmscfd, and 138,000 M3 of LNG can be converted to high pressure natural gas onboard within 5 to 6 days.
• Water heating system:The heating medium of the vaporization is sea water. In most cases, the heating water is discharged to the open sea through the hull bottom called open mode.

The World's First Arctic Drill Ship

It is the world's first arctic ship with outside temperatures as low as -40°C and has a design temperature of -50°C developed for drilling in the extreme cold environments.
The arctic drill ship has a closed derrick based on the monocoque hull specifically designed for the ship's crew to be able to operate effectively and safely while consuming the least amount of energy.

The offshore structure that enables drilling in the extreme cold weather conditions was developed to capitalize the resources that became more accessible as the Arctic sea ice is getting thinner due to global warming,

The major characteristics of the arctic drill ship are the closed derrick based and the monocoque hull which are specifically designed for the ship's crew to be able to operate effectively and safely while consuming the minimum energy.

DSME's Standard Wind Turbine Installation Vessel

Developed as DSME's unique model, the platform-based next-generation wind turbine installation vessel is an upgraded version of the conventional installation vessels, which increases the work efficiency while decreasing the costs by transporting and installing wind generators manufactured on land. It is expected to play a significant role in the wind power plant development field. The vessel has the same shape of that ordered by German-based RWEI, but is a lot larger in size which measures 145 m in length and 45 m in width. It has the capability to navigate at a speed of 11 knots (20 KPH) with five 5MW wind generators onboard.
It is significant that DSME is proactively suggesting a competitive model leading the market instead of just building according to the ship owner's specifications.

Installation Process of a Wind Turbine

The Worlds First Floating Shipbuilding Method Succeeded

It is a new building method that builds a ship on a floating dock instead of a conventional dry dock.
A floating dock is a box made of steel with a U-shaped cross-section and floodable buoyancy chambers. The narrow basin is flooded to allow a ship to be floated in, then drained to allow that the ship to come to rest on a dry dock. Floating docks are used in a place where building a dry dock is not feasible. But safety issues need to be considered when they are flooded or floating, and it is expensive to build. In addition, there are disadvantages like shorter life cycles and more maintenance work compared to dry docks.

Machinery Arrangement

It is a vessel that uses nuclear energy for propulsion in lieu of conventional fossil fuels. Various fossil fuel powered engines are in use for vessels such as ice breakers, arctic tankers, and container ships can be replaced with nuclear engines, opening up infinite possibilities, and it also can be used as a power source for mining vessels and subsea plants.

Power Generation Facility with Onboard Power Station

The BMPP (Barge Mounted Power Plant) is a power plant installed on a deck barge located in the sea or by seaside or mounted onshore to generate electricity using resources such as coal, gas, and nuclear power.
A BMPP is installed after its bare and topside are built in the shipyard first and transferred, which results in advantages such as shorter construction time and increased quality, compact equipment arrangement, and relocatable generation equipment.

The installation of a BMPP is roughly divided into off-shore type and on-shore mount type. In off-shore type, the BMPP is built in the shipyard and transported to the site and used while being moored. Omitting the local mating construction expedites construction schedules for the project and offers increased installation safety.
In the on-shore mount type, an area is assigned to dock the BMPP at the power plant site, then the barge is mounted onshore to avoid the wave motion that exists when being moored and to take advantage of proximity to the onshore facilities.
